New rape bill
7:00 p.m. 2:00 p.m. 7:30 p.m.
State Rep. Vernon E. Cook of Cuyahoga Falls has introduced an Ohio bill calling for tougher prison penalties for rapists. The bill was prompted by Akron detective Richard May who feels that Ohio rape laws do no deal harshly enough with the common “career" (repeat) rapist. Cook's bill calls for a minimum five-year prison term for rape; a minimum 10-year term for aggravated rape (rape involving the use of actual or threatened physical harm and death or where the criminal has been convicted previously of a similar crime); and minimum terms of 10 and 15 years when the rape or aggravated rape is against a girl under 13.

Gay Alliance's new doings
By Rob Davis
Gay Alliance has both new leadership and new directions. Keith Gasper was elected as President and Brian Kindler as Vice-President in elections held in Spring, 1979. G.A. has strengthened its role as a serviceprovider in the Columbus gay community. Staffing of the office and reaching into the community are strong priorities. A person's first contact with openly gay peo-
for communication. A calendar of events, as well as articles of general interest, are published on a monthly basis. This publication is available at bars and baths, as well as in businesses in the university area and German Village.
Gay Alliance has a new meeting schedule, alternating business and "program" meetings.
These are meetings which include speakers or films and deal with an important aspect of being gay. Program meetings are publicized ahead of time, and new people are brought to the group as a result.
Gay Alliance has a new address: P.O. Box 8296, Columbus, Ohio 43201. G.A.'s phone number is still (614)-422-9212.

and the group is now better prepared to help with a person's coming out and entry into the community.
Community outreach is an important part of Gay Alliance's new focus. The speaker's bureau has grown, with many groups and classes requesting speakers. New promotional materials have been developed, which explain the many programs of Gay Alliance. Outreach into the larger gay community is also important, whereas in the past, the group was viewed as a student-only group. The office is staffed much of the time, and a telephone answering machine covers the hours that the office is closed.
